A Rancher alternative with no management cluster to run.

Ankra's control plane is hosted in the EU, so there is no management server to install, upgrade or back up. Keep the clusters you run and import them with one Helm command, or build new ones with kubeadm or k3s. Pricing is public, and the first 30 vCPU are free.

30 vCPU free for life. No credit card. Unlimited team members.

  • No management cluster. The control plane is hosted in the EU, and Ankra upgrades its own control plane and agent.
  • Public pricing. The first 30 worker vCPU are free, then €7.20 per vCPU a month on Startup. Controller nodes are free. Pricing.
  • Keep your clusters. Import RKE2, k3s or any conformant cluster with one Helm command. Import guide.
  • Leaving RKE1? Rebuild on kubeadm or k3s on Hetzner, OVHcloud, UpCloud, DigitalOcean, AWS EC2 or Proxmox VE.
  • GitOps with nothing extra to operate. Ankra's own engine applies your stacks, with no Argo CD or Flux to run.
  • EU-hosted by default. Self-hosted and air-gapped on the Enterprise plan.

The most common reason teams look for a Rancher alternative is the management server itself. SUSE's guide for a highly available Rancher install assumes three nodes, a load balancer and a DNS record, and that cluster needs upgrades and backups like any other. Ankra has no management cluster. One agent in each cluster connects outbound to a control plane that Ankra hosts in the EU, in Finland.

Pricing is the other common reason. SUSE's shop shows Rancher Prime prices after you sign in. Ankra's prices are public: every plan includes 30 worker vCPU free, Startup costs €7.20 per worker vCPU a month beyond that, and controller nodes are never billed.

This page is the short version. The full, sourced comparison is Ankra vs Rancher.

Keep your clusters

Keep the clusters you run.
Import them with one Helm command.

Importing installs the Ankra agent in your cluster. The agent only makes outbound connections, so the cluster can stay behind a firewall, NAT or a private network. Clusters Rancher created, including RKE2 and k3s, are imported like any conformant cluster, and the workloads on them keep running as they are.

Need new clusters instead? Ankra builds kubeadm or k3s on Hetzner, OVHcloud, UpCloud, DigitalOcean, AWS EC2 and Proxmox VE, and creates EKS, GKE, AKS, DOKS, OVHcloud MKS and UpCloud UKS.

Awaiting Connection, then Healthy

No management server

Ankra's control plane is a hosted service in the EU. Ankra upgrades its own control plane and agent, so there is no management cluster for your team to patch.

GitOps with nothing extra to run

Stacks order Helm charts and manifests by dependency, so the database comes up before the service that needs it. Ankra's own engine applies them from a GitHub or Bitbucket Cloud repository.

Clusters built and operated

On the clusters Ankra builds, it handles upgrades, node groups, stop and start schedules, and node autoscaling on the five public clouds.

Repository to URL

Applications generate the build files. Pipelines run tests, rootless builds and Semgrep, Checkov and Trivy scans in your cluster, and pull-request previews work with GitHub repositories.

CVEs ranked by real exploitation

The Security Center ranks vulnerabilities in running workloads by CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue and FIRST's EPSS scores, with SBOMs and compliance evidence.

Cost and backups

Cloud Cost estimates spend per namespace and stack, and backups write volumes and databases to a bucket you own.

Step by step

Try Ankra next to Rancher

Start with a cluster you already run. Rancher can keep managing it while you compare.

  1. 1

    Create a free Ankra account

The free plan includes 30 worker vCPUs and unlimited team members, and needs no credit card.

  2. 2

    Import a cluster

In Ankra, open Clusters, select Import, name the cluster and run the helm command Ankra shows. It carries the cluster's own token, so copy it exactly. The import guide covers the details.

  3. 3

    Check it is connected

The status moves from Awaiting Connection to Healthy, usually within a minute. If it does not, check the agent pod.

    kubectl get pods -n ankra
  4. 4

Move one service into a Stack

Pick a service and its dependencies, put them in a Stack with the right ordering, and connect a Git repository so every change is a commit.

  5. 5

    Compare the work that remains

Upgrade an add-on, ship a release with tests and scans, look up a vulnerability across workloads, and note which tool left work for your team.

Where Rancher is still the right choice

Rancher is an established platform, and for these teams it remains the better fit. Ankra does not try to replace it here.

Open source you host yourself

Rancher is Apache-2.0 and self-hosted by default. Ankra is a commercial platform with an open source CLI, Terraform provider and agent chart, hosted in the EU by default and self-hosted, including air-gapped, on Enterprise.

vSphere, bare metal and Windows nodes

Rancher installs RKE2 or K3s on bare metal, vSphere and node drivers, and the SUSE stack adds Windows nodes and VMs beside containers.

Runtime security enforcement

SUSE Security, formerly NeuVector, adds network segmentation and runtime protection. Ankra ranks vulnerabilities by real exploitation instead.

A large multi-tenant console

Many human operators working in one mature console over a large estate is where Rancher has years of depth.

Know before you start

When to stay with Rancher

Ankra is not the right switch for every estate. Choose Rancher when one of these is true.

  • An open source platform you host yourself is a hard requirement.
  • You provision on vSphere or bare metal through node drivers, or need Windows nodes or VMs beside containers.
  • Runtime security enforcement matters more than ranking vulnerabilities.
  • Many operators need a mature multi-tenant console over a large estate.

Leaving RKE1

SUSE ended RKE1 on 31 July 2025 and asks RKE1 users to re-platform to RKE2 or K3s. If you have to rebuild the clusters anyway, it is a good moment to decide where the management layer should live as well.

With Ankra you can import the existing cluster first, so the old and the new sit in one view. Then build the replacement with kubeadm or k3s on the provider you choose, with a private network and a bastion, and move workloads across one Stack at a time. Stacks keep the order, so a database comes up before the service that needs it. For the wider move, see bring your existing infrastructure.

Questions teams actually ask

Is there a Rancher alternative with no management server to run?+

Yes. Ankra's control plane is a hosted service in the EU, so there is no management cluster to install, upgrade or back up. One agent in each cluster connects outbound to it. Enterprise customers can also run Ankra self-hosted, including air-gapped.

Can I keep my RKE2 or k3s clusters?+

Yes. Ankra imports any conformant Kubernetes cluster with one Helm command, including clusters Rancher created. Importing installs the Ankra agent and leaves the workloads running as they are.

What should I do about RKE1 end of life?+

SUSE ended RKE1 on 31 July 2025 and asks users to re-platform to RKE2 or K3s. If you are rebuilding, Ankra can build kubeadm or k3s clusters on Hetzner, OVHcloud, UpCloud, DigitalOcean, AWS EC2 or Proxmox VE and move workloads across in Stacks.

How is Ankra priced?+

Pricing is public. Every plan includes 30 worker vCPUs free, controller nodes are never billed, and on the Startup plan each worker vCPU beyond the first 30 costs €7.20 a month. Self-hosted and air-gapped installs are on the Enterprise plan at custom pricing.

Does Ankra need Argo CD or Flux for GitOps?+

No. Ankra's own engine applies Stacks from a GitHub or Bitbucket Cloud repository, and add-ons are standard Helm releases, so helm list and helm rollback still work.
